Is Time Travel Really Possible?

Explaining the concept with the help of Grandfather Paradox.

What Exactly is the Grandfather Paradox ?

You all have heard this term in Instagram reels or Youtube shorts , this an interesting theory but so as it is complex and enigmatic. So lets understand this , Let us assume that you have a power to travel in time , you go to a particular period where your Grandfather wasn’t married and you kill him which prevents him from meeting your Grandmother, That means your parents weren’t born and so are you. So the time traveler (you) wouldn’t exist and if you didn't exist , you cannot go back in time and prevent the meeting of your Grandparents.

This creates a loop , where the causes and effects contradict each other. That in a sense means that time travel doesn’t exist.

What WILL be the consequences of this?

Multiverse Theory :  The theory of Multiverse has been shown in Marvel movies , so according to this theory different branches like timeline will be created.

Closed Causal Loops :  Some interpretations of time travel , like in General relativity, suggest that such paradoxes will resolve themselves due to consistent histories.

What ‘Theory of Relativity’ says about this ?

We all know about Theory of Relativity. But if you don’t ? No worries I will explain it to you shortly. This is a fundamental theory developed by Albert Einstein , which includes two components : Special Relativity and General Relativity.

  • Special Relativity (1905) : The theory primarily deals with objects moving at constant speeds particularly at speeds close to the speed of light. It introduced several revolutionary concepts :  Relativity of Simultaneity, Time Dilation , Length Contraction , E=mc².
  • General Relativity (1915) : General relativity extends the principles of Special Relativity to include gravity. It provides a new way of understanding gravity, different from Newton’s theory : Space-Time Curvature , Gravitational Time Dilation , Black Holes.

Albert Einstein was himself skeptical of time travel to the past , primarily because it violates causality (the principle that cause precedes effect). He believed the law of physics should not allow such contradictions. However , He acknowledged that General Relativity does not explicitly forbid backward time travel. He suggested that the practical limitations (e.g ., the need for the exotic matter or the instability of wormholes) make it highly improbable.
